The originally Dutch television production company Endemol, which is in hands of the Spanish national telecom operator Téléfonica, made public that they are going to produce a new programme. The show has a lot in common with… the Eurovision Song Contest!
Yesterday, the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Endemol wants to make a European show called Eurobest 2003. The participants will be the winners of Idols or comparable formats such as Operación Triunfo, Starmaker and Pop Idol. The show will be made by the French channel TF1 and will take place in Cannes, France, on March 25th.
A spokesperson of Endemol told esctoday.com: “in this stage we are negotiating with various broadcasters to decide which countries will participate“. When we asked if this show was meant as competative programme next to the Eurovision Song Contest, she said that “no further details have been worked out”.
The concept of the show has, as far as details are known, a lot in common with the Eurovision Song Contest. The fact that the winner of Operación Triunfo is already 'meant' for the Eurovision Song Contest makes this whole idea even more controversial.
