At this time of year, the most interesting news for many people is about which countries could make their debut or return in the upcoming contest, or who could withdraw. Many rumours are currently circulating in the fan world about possible withdrawals, one of the popular ones being the Czech Republic, who have so far come last and second last in their two participations at the contest.

However, ČT has confirmed that they are still interested in the Eurovision Song Contest, and will be taking part in 2009 as well, unless their budget is overstretched, which is unlikely as they will not have to budget for Olympic or Euro coverage in 2009.

As yet, no famous Czech singers have announced their interest to represent the Czech Republic in Moscow, but criticism of Tereza Kerndlová's live performance in Belgrade in 2008 has brought media attention to the contest in one of Eurovision's newest member states.

The Czech Republic debuted in 2007 with one of their most successful bands of all time, Kabát, who nevertheless could only manage 1 point and last position in the semi final. Tereza Kerndlová, another commerically successful artist in the country, could not fare much better in Belgrade, scoring 9 points and second-to-last in the second semi final.
