It is with great sadness that we report that the UK’s longest running commentator at the Eurovision Song Contest, Sir Terry Wogan has died today at the age of 77.

The news was confirmed by his family who released this statement:

“He passed away surrounded by his family. While we understand he will be missed by many, the family ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”

Sir Terry Wogan was born in Limerick on 3 August 1938 and had a 50 year long career in both UK and Irish television and radio.

From 1980, Terry Wogan provided the UK commentary every year at the Eurovision before retiring from the role in 2008.

ESCToday will shortly release an obituary looking back at the life of a broadcasting legend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sir Terry Wogan and his family.

Hello my name is Daniel Doyle. I am 19 years old and I live in Rushden, United Kingdom. My first Eurovision was in 2004 where I was given permission by my parents to stay up late to watch the contest. Since then I have been a hardcore fan. The first Eurovision I went to was in 2010 and I hope to go to more in the near future.
