Vânia Fernandes is the name of the singer that will perform the song Senhora do Mar at the 2008 Festival da Canção. The music was composed by Andrej Babic and the lyrics were written by Carlos Coelho, invited by RTP to take part at the national final. Vania spoke to esctoday.com about her song and her career so far.

Vânia is a 23 year-old singer that won the last edition of the popular Idol like show “Operação Triunfo” in Portugal. She was born in the Island of Madeira which is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira is known as a popular tourist destination due to its warm climate all year round.

Vânia started entering music contests at the age of 10. She then went on to perform in hotels and local festivities in her hometown and around the island. Previous to her participation at the TV-show, she did her singing and music studies on Conservatório do Funchal (a music school).

The producer picked her because the song “will suit her voice perfectly”. During the weeks she spent on the show, she was highly complimented by the jury for her powerful voice and strong stage presence.

On 9 March she will try her luck singing ‘Senhora do Mar’ to get the ticket to represent Portugal at the 2008 Eurovision Songcontest. She will have as backing singers Joana, Evelyne, Jessica, Jonas and Luis who were her colleagues on the programme .
