Corinna: Handicap no obstacle

Corinna May has never let her handicap restrain her life. Now the blind German singer is one of the top favourites at this year's ESC. “I want to show the world that anything is possible.”

Corinna May represents Germany this year, but her way to the Eurovision stage has been everything else but straight. She won the 1999 German pre-selection, but after it had been disclosed that the composer had performed the song in public prior to the deadline, she was disqualified. In 2000, she finished second.

“Of course it was a major disappointment not to be in Jerusalem. But now in retrospect I think my getting disqualified was a good edperience. I think it toughened me up”, Corinna May says.

Corinna has been blind since birth, but she has always had the will to live, and she has never allowed her handicap to knock her out. “Agreed, everyday things like going up a stair do get a bit more complicated when you're blind. At the same time I don't really know what I've “missed” as I've never been able to see. But the people in my surroundings are very nice to me and helpful”, Corinna says and hugs her backing girls in the band Queen-Size.

In less than 35 hours, Corinna May and her song 'I can't live without music' may very well be receiving the Grand Prix. Germany is one of the top favourites this year. “Oh dear, this is really funny. The song is really great and I believe it can make it all the way to 1st place. But it's going to be tough, I think. Afro-Dites songs makes you happy and want to dance.”

Corinna herself feels that she has proven something very essential to other handicapped people. “Just because you're handicapped doesn't mean you can't achieve things.” This is what Corinna wishes to prove via her participation in the ESC.
“Anything is possible if you really want it”, Corinna sums up.
