With a presidential decree, Yuschenko has temporarily cancelled the need to obtain entry visas to Ukraine for citizens from the European Union and Switzerland from 1st of May until 1st of September, according to reports from the Ukrainian news agency.
“This step was taken for the purpose of transparency of Ukrainian society and realisation of the policy of integration with the EU, and also for creating conditions for investments and acceleration of personal contacts”, the Ukrainian news agency explained.
During the period of the visa-free regime, an analysis will be conducted of its aspects so that it will be used later during liberalisation of mutual travels of citizens of Ukraine, EU countries and Switzerland. Yuschenko also instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to develop a mechanism for compensating the revenues to the budget from visas.
Earlier we reported that this decree was due to be signed, to make it easier for visitors to the Eurovision Song Contest and other international events in Ukraine. During a meeting earlier this year, Eurovision Song Contest supervisor Svante Stockselius spoke with Yuschenko about the visa procedures.
