The fight to represent the United Kingdom has received more press attention than any other in recent history, and arguments between some of the contestants have been well publicised, as their publicity campaigns gathered pace.
The show was opened by Ruslana with a reprising last year's winning song Wild dances, and she returned later to read the results of the international internet voting results. The United Kingdoms first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, Sandie Shaw was a special guest to read the results of the SMS voting.

During the break between the performances, the audience in the studio was treated to footage from previous contests, as well as a guest performance from former entrant Sonia, who represented the United Kindgom in 1993. She sung versions of Waterloo and Boom bang a bang as well as her own song Better the devil you know and her own first chart hit You'll never stop me loving you. There was also a karaoke Eurovision Song Contest, with audience members, and a quiz.
The main programme then returned at 21:20 CET for the crucial results. The voting was split into 6 regions, each awarding 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 points. In addition, the international internet vote counted as a 7th region. The SMS vote was split by percent, with one point given for each percentage of the vote.
