The representative of Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest 1983, Çetin Alp, was found dead last night by his daughter. Doctors say that he died of a heart attack.
Çetin Alp participated in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1983 in Munich with the song Opera. He was accompanied by a backing-group called the Short Wave. The song finished last with 0 points.
Alp was invited to the Nightvision party, the OGAE Turkey event which gathered many past Turkish Eurovision singers and Eurovision fans last Friday in Istanbul, one night before this year's final. At the very last moment he sent his apologies that he did not feel good and would not be able to attend the party. Aykut Berber, president of OGAE Turkey, describes the death of Alp as “sad and shocking news”.
After the Eurovision Song Contest, Çetin Alp participated in the Balkan Song Contest, where he won the best-talent award. Çetin Alp is the first Turkish Eurovision singer who passed away. His funeral takes place on Friday, 21st May. OGAE Turkey told esctoday.com they will be represented at the ceremony.
Çetin Alp is the third 1983 participant that passed away. One of the Hoffman-brothers from Germany and Ofra Haza from Israel passed away earlier.
