After the surprise winning this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Turkey made another surprising decision: the punk band Athena will represent the host country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, which will take place in Istanbul. This was officially confirmed today at the broadcaster's website.

According to a TRT press release, Athena will present three songs in a television programme and Turkish television viewers will choose the one for the Eurovision Song Contest by means of televoting. Athena, a punk orientated band, has gained popularity in Turkey with their anthem for the Turkish basketball team, 12 Dev Adam (12 Giants).

TRT also confirmed that the 49th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Istanbul on May 12th (qualifying round) and May 15th (final).
