Georgia: GPB to select Eurovision 2020 Georgian song internally

GBP, the Georgian national broadcaster, has announced that the 2020 Eurovision entry will be selected via an internal selection whilst the candidate will be determined via the forthcoming edition of Georgian Idol.

Georgia and its national broadcaster GPB are working round the clock in their quest to search for the 2020 Georgian Eurovision act and entry.

GPB has set up a special committee to selec the song that will represent Georgia at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. The committee includes Natia Mshvenieradze (Georgian Head of Delegation at ESC/GPB) and Ms Natia Uznadze ( Eurovision Producer at GPB).

Two phase national selection

The 2020 Georgian Eurovision selection will consist of 2 phases:

  • The first phase will determine the 2020 Georgian Eurovision candidate via Georgian Idol (Fall Edition). After the auditions phase a total of 10 candidates will partake in the live shows in the battle to with the competition and ultimately represent Georgia at Eurovision 2020.
  • The second phase will consist of the song selection for Eurovision 2020, which will be determined via GPB’s special committe. The selection team will be responsible to select the song and oversee the overall preparations leading up to Eurovision in May ( recording of the song, filming of the official music video, performance and staging in Rotterdam, choreography, marketing and publicity, costumes etc.)

The new edition of Georgian Idol is set to kick off in Georgia this month.

Georgia in Eurovision

Georgia debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 with Sopho Khalvashi’s Visionary dream and is yet to win the competition. The country achieved its best results in the contest in Oslo (2010) and Dusseldorf (2011) when it placed 9th in the Grand Final.

Georgia has competed 12 times in Europe’s favorite television show, the country has partaken in the event every year since their debut in 2007 with the exception of 2009 when the nation opted to stay out of the competition.

In 2019 the country opted to select its Eurovision act and entry for Tel Aviv via Georgian Idol Oto Nemsadze was declared the winner of Georgian Idol 2019 and had the honour of representing Georgia at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Israel with his entry ‘ Keep on going‘. Despite a magnificent performance Georgia failed to qualify to the Grand Final for the third year in a row.
