BNS: Demonstrations ought to take place

Baltic News Service (BNS) reported that in spite of the refusal of Riga City Council, the members of Russian community in Latvia and left wing parties are intending to organize demonstrations in Riga during the Eurovision week.

They are planning to protest against the law that forces Russian language schools in Latvia start using Latvian partly in teaching and learning process. The organizer Igor Pimenev said on Friday to BNS that he's not doing this without permissions with great pleasure, but sees no other options in this matter. “Manifestation will take place and it'll be grandiose,” promised Pimenov.

Chief of the Riga Municipal Police Janis Gedu�evs said to BNS that during the Eurovisionweek all the forces are involved in making Riga secure. “It is definately an extra load of work to carry, but on May 23rd our forces are ready for any disorder. We certainly are!“, he added.

The actions have already been condemned by Latvian Prime Minister Einars Rep�e and President Vaira Vike-Freiberga. Rep�e called the protest cheap trick to get the attention of the numerous foreign journalists.
