Exciting news today as Germany has confirmed their participation at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest! And with a national selection looking probable, is Germany’s luck in the contest set to change next year in Lisbon?

Let’s get happy as earlier today, Germany’s national broadcaster NDR confirmed to ESCToday that the nation will be competing at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in the host city of Lisbon, Portugal!

Having revealed that a national selection is more than likely to take place in order to select Germany’s entrant for 2018, we ask the question… Is it right?

Germany and Eurovision over the years

Officially appearing on the Eurovision stage the highest amount of times since their debut in 1956, Germany has seen a grand total of 61 appearances at the Eurovision Song Contest, having only missed one contest in 1996.

The nation has received a varying mix of results over the years, including 12 Top 3 placings – including 2 victories – as well as 7 last places, 2 of which were accumulated in the current decade.

Having alternated between selection methods over their participating years, NDR has been opting to host a national selection process consistently since 2012 and haven’t looked back since! Will we see any major changes to Germany’s selection process for 2018?

National final in 2018?

With a national selection process looking like the likely option for the nation, will 2018 be the year which can take Germany to the left-hand side of the scoreboard?

Since the country’s last victory in 2010 with Lena and her entry Satellite, the national broadcaster has presented a number of varied selection processes for the country; from mixed internal and national selections to multiple-stage selections, Germany has really given us a huge variety of options over recent years!

However in recent years, a visible decline in results have been seen from the nation, including 2 last places in both 2015 and 2016. But what can Germany do in order to bring them back to the top? Is a change in selection process help the nation, or could an internal selection be the right option?

Levina won Germany’s national final in 2017 with her song Perfect life (25th in Grand Final: 6 points)

Further details regarding Germany’s selection process are set to be unveiled in due course.
