Malta – Behind the scenes

Fever is getting high in Malta as the 20 contestants in tonight's Eurosong Festival line-up are getting ready for tonight's show. Many familiar former Maltese Eurovision Song Contest entrants will compete tonight. esctoday.com met artists such as Chiara (ESC 1998 + 2005), Giorgina (ESC 1991) and Miriam Christine (ESC 1996) during last night's dress rehearsal. Besides that, two 2009 representatives will perform tonight during the interval act.

Just before going on stage we met a very confident Chiara, who already represented her country twice in the Eurovision Song Contest. This year she will take part with another ballad. Her song What if we was written bytwo Belgian songwriters she told esctoday.com "I've been working with for several years already. I was asked to take part last year as well, but it wasn't the right moment yet, as I just had my baby. This year I accepted the challenge, as I couldn't resist singing this beautiful song that suits perfectly to me. It would be great to make it to Moscow, as my previous 2 attempts have been wonderful experiences. I learned a lot from it and I loved the family atmosphere surrounding the contest'

If Chiara manages to win the Malta Eurosong Festival tongiht, it will be a historical moment, as no other Maltese artist has ever represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest on 3 occasions.

Another familiar face is the one of Joseph Chetcuti, who featured in Chiara's videoclip of The One that I love, back in 1998 and who joined Olivia Lewis on stage in the 2007 Eurovision Song Cotnest. This year he will give it a try as a solo artist being the lead singer and violonist of Baklava. He told esctoday.com: "I'm very excited about this participation, although the last dress rehearsal was a disappointment, due to some technical problems. I' m sure it will be solved for the final though. The experience in Helsinki was unforgettable, and I would love to relive the same experience in Moscow. My song Kamikaze lover was written by Gerard James Borg and really stands out from all the other songs, I think. I was approached by Gerard to enter this song for the Maltese selection, and I was very enthusiastic when I first heard it. Lets hope the jury and the viewers will pick the song, just because it's different from all the other entries. Again there are many ballads in the competition, amongst which Raquela's song Crossroads is my favourite".

Apparently Maltese artists never get tired of renewing their experience of the national final and the Eurovision Song Conted, as Giorgina herself revealed to esctoday.com her passion for the Eurovision Song Contest. On the other hand Miriam Christine sees her forthcoming participation from another angle: "I was only 16 years old in 1996; this time I' m entering the competion as a mature woman", she says. The song Mama is an emotional ballad as it is dedicated to all mothers in the world.

Tonight the promotional tours for both Turkish hopeful Hadise and the UK representative Jade will kick off during the Maltese interval act. Both songs were very well received in the hall during last night's dress rehearsal. Both singers will prepare promotional tours preceding the Eurovision Song Contest, and details will be revealed soon.

Last year's Maltese bid for Eurovision, Morena, will performthree songs as well during the interval act; hertwo entries from last year's Malta Song for Europe plus her new single Nobody's Girl, written by Gerard James Borg. "Never say never" Morena said when we asked her if we might ever see her back again in the Eurovision Song Contest.
