Discover Vienna: Breakfast and Brunch in the city!

by Sanjay (Sergio) Jiandani 554 views

There is scarcely a more classic way to begin a day in Vienna than with breakfast in a coffee house. Almost all coffee houses offer breakfast, from the classic Viennese version with rolls through to more sophisticated creations. Good examples are Café Leopold and Café Drechsler on Naschmarkt. At the Dreschler, even goulash and Sacher sausages can be ordered in the early morning, perfect after a night on the tiles!

However, other restaurants offer the true breakfast experiences. Breakfast from around the world can be enjoyed at the Haas & Haas tea house right behind St. Stephen’s Cathedral. More than 30 types of breakfast are on the menu here, all of which are served in the typical national style. The Chinese version with dim sum is served on a banana leaf in a steam basket.

Numerous creative breakfast combinations can also be enjoyed at Café Français. Everything is on the menu here – from French Toast to warm, filled baguettes. The Joma specializes in egg dishes of every conceivable variety. A special tip here are the sophisticated cereals such as Bircher muesli and Amaranth porridge.

The breakfast served at Meierei im Stadtpark, which belongs to Restaurant Steirereck, is sensational. The eggs here are served with shaved goose liver, while the Viennese “brunch” includes veal lungs or goulash. Refined dining can also be enjoyed at Meinl am Graben in the early morning – including a champagne breakfast with oysters or the sought-after Beef Tartare.

At Hansen, diners sit surrounded by wonderful plants. The restaurant in the old stock exchange has a varied breakfast menu. Above all the variety of egg dishes is a hit – sometimes truffled with salmon, sometimes with pumpkin seed oil.

Particularly extensive is the breakfast menu at Point of Sale in the trendy district around Naschmarkt. The offering ranges from the Italian to the Indian breakfast, from the Zen to the Relax breakfast, daily until 3.00 pm, and as late as 5.00 pm on weekends and public holidays.

Muesli lovers get their money’s worth at Corns n’Pops, where guests can make their own muesli from over 50 ingredients. Also on the menu are waffles, all sorts of bagels and a muesli brunch.

Brunch at the weekend

At Gerstners Landpartie, visitors enjoy a Sunday brunch in the romantic ambiance of Gerstners Landhaus – with culinary delicacies such as Tafelspitzsulz and Landhaus salad with runner beans (11.00 am – 2.00 pm).

One of the best-known brunch venues in Vienna is the Wäscherei. A giant buffet offers everything the heart desires here on the weekend.

The Sunday brunch at the Mill is unbeatable. The range of dishes that are served at the buffet here is almost unsurpassable. In summer, the whole affair is laid out in one the prettiest dining gardens in Vienna.

An imperial ambience is offered by the Sunday Brunch in the Kunsthistorisches Museum (11.00 am – 2.30 pm), where you can also wend your way through the exhibitions.

A breakfast as in the days of the emperor awaits visitors at the Sisi Buffet in Café Gloriette at Schönbrunn Palace (Su 9.00 am – 11.30 am).

Another tip is the Sunday brunch in the Rote Bar at the Volkstheater (10.00 am – 2.00 pm).

The Flying Breakfast at the Labstelle is only held on Saturdays: The kitchen serves small dishes continuously from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm – for a flat-rate price.
