Good evening Europe, this is Reykjavik calling! Eurovision lights went on last night in the capital of the North for the grand final of the Icelandic selection to the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest. The nordic nation ended a three-weekend long competition to crown the winner of Söngvakeppnin 2025. It is Vaeb with the entry ‘Roa’.

Songvakeppnin 2025 was hosted by Benedikt Valsson, Fannar Sveinsson and Guðrún Dís Emilsdóttir and wa held at the RVK Studios in Gufunes. Six contenders were on stage tonight. They qualified from two semifinals who took place on 8 and 15 February respectively. The televote and the international jury both accounted for 50% of the final result.

Tonight’s line-up

  • Júlí & Dísa – Eldur
  • Bjarni Arason – Ađeins lengur
  • Tinna – Þrá
  • VÆB – RÓA

We have a winner!

The three hosts took the audience through a very exciting voting sequence. RUV performed a change in the voting rules compared to recent years. They scrapped the Superfinal with the top two of the first round, and instead proceeded with only one voting round. The entry with the highest amount of points between the jury and the televote will be given the honour of representing Iceland at the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland.

And the winner was VAEB with the entry ‘Roa’ ! VAEB is due to perform on the Eurovision stage during the first half of the first semi final on Tuesday 13 May 2025. Vaeb will follow the footsteps of the Icelandic Queen of Eurovision Hera Björk.

Iceland in Eurovision

Iceland debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1986 and is yet to win the event. The country achieved its best results in the competition in 1999 (Selma) and 2009 (Yohanna) when it placed 2nd in the Grand Final. The Nordic nation has partaken in Europe’s favorite television show 36 times.

In 2024 Eurovision Queen Hera Björk represented Iceland in Malmö, Sweden, with the entry Scared of heights. She unfortunately failed to qualify to the Grand Final.
