Last Thursday, in Carcassonne (south of France), famous French conductor Rene Coll passed away at the age of 68. The man was the composer of France's 1999 entry, Je veux donner ma voix, performed by Nayah.
in a family of musicians, Rene Coll early worked as saxophonist in different groups, before having his first jazz band. Very quickly, as French TV was looking for professional orchestras, his own orchestra submitted popular shows, from the late 60’s to the early 90’s.
When France 3 decided to revamp a televised selection for Eurovision, in 1999, René Coll and his musicians were chosen to play for the 12 entries. Coll’s own contribution was selected… and it won the final. René Coll was part of the French delegation in Jerusalem, although he didn’t use the conductor’s baton… as 1999 was the first year with no orchestra at Eurovision !
René Coll’s official website has opened a special blog (here) where readers can submit their condolences
Special thanks to Patrice.
