According to German newspaper taz, the Polish band Ich Troje is trying to participate in both the Polish and the German national final with the same song. German broadcaster NDR says this is backed by the rules.
Ich Troje are already on the participant's list of the Polish final Eirovizja 2003, which will be held on January 25th, with their song 'Bez granic' ('No borders'). Bandleader Michal Wisniewski, who owns both the Polish and German citizenship, now revealed to the German newspaper taz that he plans to enter the exact same song to the German final, which will be held on March 7th.
The song will then be sung in German and called 'Ohne Grenzen', Wisniewski said he will engage a German female singer for that occasion.
In case Ich Troje would win the Polish final, which will be held earlier, the band would then not participate in the German final.
When asked about the possibility of entering a song to two different national finals, Dr. Jürgen Meier-Beer from German broadcaster NDR replied to OGAE Germany that “this is not forbidden by the German rules. But there could be some problematic aspects. Whoever enters on January 7th 2003, the deadline for entering songs to the German final is contractually obligated to participate on March 7th. I cannot imagine that the responsible German record company carries a possible withdrawal, because that would be a breach of contract.”
Meier-Beer said that no final decision about the issue will be made before Januar 7th.
