Two Norwegian brothers have participated in their country’s selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest.
They are Didrik and Emil Solli- Tangen and respectively they took part in the Melodi Grand Prix shows of 2010 and 2013. Didrik is the older brother and had the first bite of the MGP cherry, winning with My heart is yours and, as Norway was the Eurovision host broadcaster, going straight to the final. Unfortunately he only achieved 20th place out of the 25 participants.
Three years later his younger brother Emil took part in the Norsk MGP, being featured along with the group Gromth. The song was called Alone. The singers didn’t qualify for the Gold Final and so that was the end of the 2013 journey.
As is reported in www.varden.no/ the brothers have been performing together again. On 10 January 2015 they were accompanied by the Oslo Strings, a string quartet of four young women Isa Caroline Holmesland, Ragnhild Lien, Karoline Vik Hegge and Kaja Fjellberg Pettersen and Trond Akrerø Kleven at the grand piano.
Various media reported the show as taking the audience on a journey through the brothers’ musical favorites, from the 1800s to today. Olav Graasvold from Varden wrote:
The brothers were very much at home but a hint of premiere nerves seemed to be there. As the concert continued they settled down, smiling and being much more relaxed,as they performed music that ranged from Queen to Caruso, from Joni Mitchell via Sinatra Andrea Bocelli.
The concert was designed so that each of the two sang a few solo numbers and then a duet, before it was again time for solo numbers. Emil’s personal interpretation of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now was also part of last year’s concert.
Didrik got to show off his beautiful voice in numbers like Il Mare Calmo Della Sera.
The show was an undoubted success and we must hope that this becomes a tradition and that the brothers perform again, together in concert.
