The EBU has announced that a total of 36 countries will compete at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhangen next May. The number of participating countries could rise to 37 if Slovenia confirms its participation in the coming days.

Slovenia has been given a 10 day extension in order to confirm its participation. Croatia, Serbia, Cyprus and Bulgaria have decided to opt out of the competition in 2014. Bosnia Herzegovina initially applied to compete in the contest but withdrew its application. Portugal and Poland will return to the contest this year, whilst Greece will indeed participate in Copenhagen with its new broadcaster NERIT.

Morocco, Monaco, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Andorra, Luxembourg and Turkey confirmed to esctoday.com that they have no intention on returning to the event in 2014.

The BIG 5 countries: France, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy will compete in the grand final on 10 May along with Denmark, this year’s host country. A total of 30 countries will compete in the 2 semi-finals, 15 in each semi-final. If Slovenia confirms its participation the number of countries competing in the semi- finals will rise to 31 hence dividing them into 16 in one semi-final and 15 in the other semi-final.The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will be held on 6,8 and 10 May at the B&W Hallerne in Copenhagen.
