Eurovision participation depends only on RTL

The Cultural Minister of Luxembourg has spoken about the country’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Ms. Octavie Modert assured a local portal that it is up to the national broadcaster to decide if Luxembourg will once again participate in Europe’s favorite TV show. She claims that this decision can only be taken by RTL and it is not in the power of the government.

“Why RTL isn’t taking part is something only they can answer but it’s known that active membership of the UER (EBU) costs a lot of money and of course this initiative hasn’t proven successful in the past for Luxembourg”, says ms. Modert.

Luxembourg is one of the seven countries that took part in the first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Since then, the Grand Dutchy scored five victories in 37 appearances. After a series of bad placings the Luxembourgish broadcaster decided to withdraw from the competition making their last representation in 1993.

It is yet unknown if Luxembourg will return to the Eurovision Song Contest but according to ms. Modert it is only up to the national broadcaster RTL to decide on this.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2013 will take place in Malmo, Sweden.
