RTP, the Portuguese national broadcaster has confirmed to ESCToday that it will air the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest shows live from Stockholm.

Unfortunately Portugal will not compete at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest. RTP decided to stay out of the competition this year last October, but intends to return to the contest in 2017.

In 2015 Portugal selected its Eurovision entry and act for Vienna via its traditional Eurovision national selection Festival da Cançao. Leonor Andrade represented Portugal at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest with her Há um Mar que nos Separa. Despite a great performance she failed to qualify to the grand final.

Portugal debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 and is yet to win the event. The country’s best result in the competition was achieved in 1996 when  Lucia Muniz placed 6th with her entry O meu coraçao na tem cor.

I guess that PORTUGAL will always be doomed to never win the EuroVision.
I can hardly find just only few songs from the bunch of Portugal’s entries that I just like(!)
And even these songs are not wow that great ones.
Even if Portugal was about to withdraw permanently/indefinitely
I would not really miss that country from EuroVision.
    Good riddance I say.

I completely disagree with your point above. For me, Portugal is missed and it was nice to have their beautiful entries in esc, many of them were very underrated and did not get the results they deserved. They may not have won or got top 5 but at least they didnt sell their soul to do that. They represented entries that really represented them and although I m not portuguese I found them really nice. Do you think Azerbaijan, Russia, and this year Malta and Cyprus that have songs written by Swedes really represent them? but apparently the involvement of Swedes will help them due to favouritism. At least there is Macedonia this year.

@ But at least Azerbaijan has sent good/great songs.
Portugal pretty much almost NEVER has done this
Its not that Im approving this, that Azerbaijan does
that they always buy their esc songs from abroad Scandinavia/Sweden
but at least I prefer Azerbaijan’s tactic than Portugal’s.
traditional [true to self] PORTUGAL VS sell out AZERBAIJAN
    I choose -2- 😛

It is your opinion but i disagree. All the songs would be the same. And their winning song in 2011 was not a deserved winner imo. Whereas Serbia in 2007 although in native language was a powerful winning song. And televoters did vote for a traditional song in native language last year Il Volo, and it would have been the winner in case there was only televoting.
