Prime Minister shocked

'No to Glennis, no to the European constitution'

The fact that Glennis Grace did not qualify for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest is a new and strong reason for many Dutch people to vote against the European constition, poll research shows. The referendum, in which the Dutch people can vote pro or against the constitution, takes place on 1st June.
According to a poll, the fact that "eastern European countries managed to qualify and many western European countries didn't", gives people reasons to believe that "eastern European countries will rule the other members under the new constitution". Right or not, it's all about perception of the voters! A 'no' from one member country is enough to reject the constitution for the whole European Union. Prime Minister Balkenende was shocked: "It's the world upside-down that Glennis Grace is being connected to the referendum about the European constitution. When he was asked a question about a political demonstration near the contest's venue earlier this week, Eurovision Song Contest supervisor Svante Stockselius said on yesterday's EBU press conference that "the Eurovision Song Contest is, and should be a non-political event".

If people are actually voting against the constitution on the basis of the ESC result, that's quite frightening :-)

I'll be voting NO when the UK has it's say, as probably will most of the UK - ESC result absolutely nothing to do with it - I felt Romania deserved to win anyway.

I have to say as a Dutch guy, that's not normal to the Dutch public to match the Eurovision to the European constitution. I honestly have to say that the Eastern coutries had great songs, especially Romania; I loved her!!!

And reaction on Tyrone and Nena....I think Holland was great and I had goosebumps, she has an amazing voice!!....Glennis: I LOVE U !!!!!!!

Eastern Europe is still better than the West, and that is just my opinio (not only MY opinion as you saw the final and the participating countries)! Pathetic to blame it on the other countries. 10 countries gave points... NOT ENOUGH POINTS. It's all over and this was a great esc in a great country; ja ljublju Ukrainu! ESC in Greece will be as fantastic as this year! Hope to see the best songs on the 20th of may 2006, no matter if they are from an east west middle or northern European country. (Although I prefer the music from Eastern-Europe! ;) )

Nena, the *votes* and the * taste* from the east were missing for the Netherlands to get in the final, tough. 10 countries gave Holland points ..what boring ?

It's just his opinion. Yes, Romania was coolbut I'm very glad with Helena as the winner of esc 2005. She was great!! And when you hear 'My impossible dream' for the first time it is (for the most people) boring so that's why she wasn't in the final. And all the other songs were more catchy and had a great performance. So I think Holland should improve next year!

I know and thats a good thing, every one his/her own opinion.

But this newsitem is stupid and giving such a wrong impression as it is, people were already planning to vote no(60%) and that had nothing to do with Glennis. Maybe more with the fact that those politicians are forcing/begging us to vote for it without even knowing the consequenses themself.

Lets hope France will say no..than its is not even important anymore what the outcome of the Dutch voters will be.

Nena Vassileva [23763]

I will vote yes and I'm "Dutch" too as I live in Holland. I was just reacting.

Nena if you are Dutch than you also knew that The Dutch already were planning to vote No against this European Constitution(thank god)

Ow my God this is just so tipically dutch. I'm from Holland too but I'm not so stupid as a lot of people here. Get over it. Glennis was not all that. The first time I heard the song I didn't like it at all it was boring so that's why people "didn't" vote for her. But --> No to Glennis, no to the European constitution that's sooooooo exaggerated. My God. How can you compare the European constitution with Glennis. Pathetic!

Fine, feel free to blame it on political voting, poor sound, wrong camera angles, a fool moon, the media etc. what I saw in Glennis was Whitney Houston with half the voice and double the weight with a song I forgot instantly, still though, better than most songs in the semifinal (go figure). Worst case scenario: took Greece 30 years to get to No.1

VOTE NO AGAINST the Constitution was the answer before the ESC, different polls shows. Now it will get worst for HP, though. But I still will vote NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ESC is just a silly political Circus, name only should be change into EUROVISION CIRCUS FESTIVAL, THE ECF. Im defanatly sure if I only can wistle or just look cute...., I will get my votes !

I think Glennis has not ONLY become a victim of all neighbourly voting or what ever, my guts is telling me, she was and still has been nailed by her own Country fellows as well somehow..... perhaps NOS, TROS and the Glennis management team. She was stigmatized for being too arrogant for tooooooooo many times !

@ John

I myself don't think that Glennis deserved to be in the final , the song was too boring and old-fashioned. And The Dutch majority of people were already planning to vote No against the European Constitution.

And btw I love cows they are my favo animals :)

Gerard, that's an even worse remark you made there. I'm sorry some Dutch people cannot accept that their entry this year just wasn't good enough according to other countries. As if there is a conspiracy against Glennis Grace... Stop dreaming and be realistic, the Dutch song wouldn't have made a difference in the final even though Glennis was one of the best performers of the contest.
And as for this political conclusion: most Dutch people were already planning to vote against the constitution, it's got nothing at all to do with the ESC.

Well done, Glennis.... she opened the eye's of some sleepy Dutch people! :D And I don't care if people in Europe understand it or not, because I also don't understand why Glennis AND Selma didn't go to the finale. Mabye I'm a little childish now... but the votes are also childish of the semfinale..! :)

Although this is not an political site, I will just try to explain this feeling in The Netherlands. And if you reed carefully and think it over you'll maybe understand it.
Let's just face it. In the new countries, former Iron Curtain countries, the people are used to corruption and powerplay by gouverments. There is another cultur nowadays, but it takes years before the "old" system and habits are gone. The Dutch will not vote for the constitution, because they now see (whats in a contest) what these countries can achief together. What for instance if it was a heavy politicle issue for Western Europe countries and these former Iron Curtain countries did the same ? You'll now say "I don't believe it", but give it a thought. They can be a massive thread together.
Look what they did on Thursday. And for people from the Big 4: You"ll only feel what I mean if you had the same experience than we did. But that is not an issue, because you always reach the final.
