Israel: Decision postponed for tomorrow

Israeli broadcaster was supposed to declare the country's entrant to Oslo today, but after hours of deliberations, it turns out the IBA's committee is still contemplating between Hare'l Ska'at and another candidate - Vladi Bleiberg.

According to NRG.co.il, both of the Israeli Channel 2 operators, the companies Reshet and Keshet, gave their bids to produce the show on behlaf of the IBA and broadcast it on Channel 2. Keshet suggested this year's Pop Idol runner-up Vladi Bleiberg and a budget of about 370.000 NIS whereas Reshet represented Hare'l Ska'at with an estimated bid of 260.000 NIS.

The intial intention was to declare the entrant today, before tomorrow's debate in the Knesset's (Israeli Parliament) Culture Committee, on the issue of Israel's poor results in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, after long hours of deliberations today, no decision was taken, which means a decision is expected tomorrow. This will happen sometime along side the session in parliament.

Whatever the result is, this will be the second time that the national final will not be broadcasted on IBA itself. Either Ska'at or Bleiberg will be the third Pop Idol finalist to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest. Shiri Maymon was the runner-up of the first season and went on to take the 4th place in Kyiv 2005. Boaz Mauda, who won Pop Idol of 2007, reached the 9th place for Israel in Belgrade 2008.

@Drusus 1: When have people predict Sweden to be the winner before hearing the song?? I haven seen that last year either!

@ Princess Engla - Don't pretend being naive please. I was talking about the annunal MF winner and as soon as this years MF songs are known I am sure there'll be the usual hype about the same bunch of composers/singers and of course some will also predict MF victory without knowing all songs/performances again. If it shouldn't be the case this year - fine. Some people learned a few lessons then.

UPDATE: HAREL SKA'AT WILL REPRESENT ISRAEL IN OSLO.
THE HEAD OF IBA'S CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT DIVISION WILL MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT SHORTLY AT THE PARLIAMENTARY SESSION THAT IS ADJOURNED THIS MORNING.

I am not sure a decision would necessarily be announced today. I have a feeling that this whole build-up was a result of half-truths, leaks and rumours that were made public too soon and created a false sense of security about Harel's candidacy. I believe that Harel hasn't been able to meet IBA requirements in the past in terms of finances and the same is likely to happen in 2010 even if he has the backing of one of Channel 2's franchises to cover costs for his delegation. The entire pre-selection process in Israel in recent years is a disgrace, regardless of the 2 year in a row qualification to the ESC final, because the IBA relates to the ESC as a burden that it would rather shrug off due to budgetary restraints and lack of funding. Unless there is a standard procedure that is strictly followed and adhered to year after year, we are likely to see this charade continue. That's why the parliamentary culture and Sports committee session today could put things in perspective, but then again - the motivation behind the session is mainly a political one on behalf of a predominant ex-USSR immigrants party, meant to apply pressure on the IBA so that a former USSR-origin singer is sent to Oslo. Hopefully, the right checks and balances would prevail so that the IBA is guided to make a constructive choice devoided of any dubious criterias in the future.

@Drusus 1: Almost all artists and songs are announced for MF 2010. So far I haven't seen a single person who think Sweden will win in Oslo. So you failed big time!

@ Princess Engla - Well, some fans predict Sweden will win every single year - no matter which song, composer or singer, which is much more annoying.

twice in the esc finals, and 9th in 2008 are not a reason to worry as far as the eurovision participations of Israel.. after the big vibe on Harel, it turns out someone who has NO videos on youtube could go for Israel.. weird decision ! don't they see online that everyone goes crazy for harel (i myself don't know him much and i have no real opinion on harel) and it would be a good decision ?

Well, tomorrow will be an intense Euro-day because NTU will also reveal the Ukrainian representative for Oslo (ESCtoday, late again!).
Other websites claimed that he could be Vasily Lazarovich, so another male singer for the long list...

i tell you whats the problem IBA IS REALY poor and everyone supporting keshset reshset or channel 10 to take eurovision and broadcasting it.! cuase they are the main channels in israel!
IBA was used to be the main channel of israel 20 years ago now only few watching this channel! and i think IBA shall give up and give the eurovision broadcasting to the main channels!

First of all, name of Hare'l Skaat is mentioned every year as one of possible choises as Israel representer for Eurovision...So I was really doubting, when I read the information in Maariv...Even though I want him to represent our country, because he had good chances to bring good place, what is for sure girls would like him.
