Nil points for Turkey and Armenia

The Netherlands: Jury results announced

Dutch broadcaster TROS announced both jury results and televoting results today. The overview shows a striking difference between the awarded top marks, as most of the Dutch televotes went to Turkey and Armenia, while the jury didn't give one single point to both countries. The jury's favourites appeared to be the Norwegian and French entry.

The Dutch jury consisted of the following persons: Noordje Kandt (former Dutch Head of Delegation), Martin Gijzemijter (composer and lyricist), Setske Mostaert (vocal coach), Aron van der Ploeg (creative producer) and Henk Schepers (manager of the Dutch Metropole Orchestra).

 The jury voted as follows:

  • Malta - 1 point
  • Israel - 2 points
  • Albania - 3 points
  • United Kingdom - 4 points
  • Denmark - 5 points
  • Germany - 6 points
  • Azerbaijan - 7 points
  • Iceland - 8 points
  • France - 10 points
  • Norway - 12 points

Results of televoting only:

  • Estonia - 1 point
  • France - 2 points
  • United Kingdom - 3 points
  • Iceland - 4 points
  • Greece - 5 points
  • Azerbaijan - 6 points
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina - 7 points
  • Norway - 8 points
  • Armenia 10 points
  • Turkey - 12 points

Total Dutch results (mixture of jury votes and televotes):

  • Greece - 1 point
  • Germany - 2 points
  • United Kingdom - 3 points
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina - 4 points
  • Armenia - 5 points
  • France - 6 points
  • Iceland - 7 points
  • Turkey - 8 points
  • Azerbaijan - 10 points
  • Norway - 12 points

The first reactions of the Dutch fans were quite positive about the outcome of these results. In previous years, the Netherlands awarded its top marks continuously to Turkey and Armenia, most probably because of the huge Turkish and Armenian communities living in the Netherlands. This year's results show that the 2 countries suffered from the new voting system; Turkey and Armenia received the most votes again out of the televoting, but the jury didn't give them one single point at all.

The Netherlands was represented by The Toppers in Moscow. Their entry Shine failed to make it to the final and became 17th in the second semi final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Dear ESCTODAY.COM

Why don't you make publication of the news about Turkey and Hadise in this web site? It's just not fair. Hadise has just released the "Fast life" music album but you didnt make the publication. And you are making the publications of the other countries albums. If here is a universal web site of the Eurovision, you should release the news from Turkey.
Don't be unfair and please release news from Hadise..

yes is truth, Azerbaijan has not big diaspora. But if Azerbaijan is in different semifinal with Turkey all Turks who live in Azerbaijan's same semifinal countreys will vote for Azerbaijan, and if in future Turkey want pass to the final all countreys who every year vote for Turkey will vote for Azerbaijan. Only that helps Azerbaijan has. But for me this year Azeri song was good and very powerfull, maybe vocals wasnt so good but they make very good stage show, and singers and dancenrs dresses was exellent, as for Arash i dont want to speak about his beaty :P and for sure with @ w s we have different mens style :P Sorry but if somebody give a title for duo Arash and Aysel will be " the beast and the beaty" :P but fashion designer and make up made a good job for Arash :) :P

A ethnic song done with the original cultural patterns.
Where is the originality of this song?
this a typical iran style pop song
and like Indian mimic to groaning.
always the same rythm and repeat with a short music again
It looks like a phone signals
no one accepts it as a song
this is not European taste
Go listen for yourself in a place so close to India
and don't here culture degeneration
front of the short and behind the long
with the ethnic skirt funny

Azerbaijan has not a large diaspora. But what Azerbaijan had, was a nice contemporary ethnic sounding popsong. Performed by a gorgeous girl and sympathetic looking man. That's why people voted for it.

@Erica, if Turkey song in the future is no good that countreys are going to give 8 points to Turkey even and if jurys give nil points : Netherlands, France, UK, Swiss, Germany, Belgium and if Austria join again 8 points from Austria also . And 12 points from Azerbaijan and some points from Bosnia, Albania and FYRO Macedonia , so Turkey maybe will get more than 80 points even and if turkish song is no good. That is not fair, but i dont blaim turkish people , maybe if i was immigrant i was voting also for my countrey, but i agree with u, people from west and also medditerranian countreys or dont care for ESC or if they care dont vote utlist most of them.

My feelings are mixed...the analysis of the dutch jury votes says that Turkey and Armenia didn't get points ( on purpose )to make a statement that they are not pleased to award the max. points to those countries every single year no matter what song they have...I agree, it has a feeling of justice in it.

On the other hand they actualy admit that they " manipulated " the votes to make a statement...

I guess time will tell if this will be a new pattern for the dutch jury.

I live in the Netherlands and i always watch the esc ( and i always vote ) but i cannot say the same for the dutch natives around here. My husband's family ( native dutch people ) for example don't even watch esc anymore let alone vote...anyway i must admit every year it was like a joke that the NL were giving 12 pt. to Turkey no matter what. I am happy it changed this year!

@ Lina. You must of misunderstood one of my post then.

What I have always said it that I would never call myself just Cypriot or just Turkish. I am Turkish Cypriot :) and I would never separate the two.

Yes I agree that they are two different nations. This is what I have tried to say to some people from Greece when they said that Greece and Cyprus is one nation. But they didn’t agree with me.

There has been years were I have not liked Turkey's entry... we have to wait and see for next year. This year I couldn’t actually vote for Turkey because the line was constantly busy... so I was not able to vote for Hadise.

As for my favourite countries, it has nothing to do with religion because I am not religious. I'm sure you know that Greek Cypriots are far far far more religious than Turkish Cypriots. I have only selected the countries which I usually like.

As for Cypriot entries, to be honest they do not usually appeal to me. I liked last year’s entry because it sounded very Cypriot but unfortunately it didn’t go through to the finals.

Finally, how can the maps be changed? Lol Cyprus is in Asia… that is its geographic location… I think you are confusing the European Union with Europe the continent.

Lina !!! [56410]
Tue 9 Jun 2009 18:09:27

@Ozi old maps show Cyprus as Asia, new maps show Cyprus as Europe, and anyway Cyprus song has nothing to do with ur ignorand for Cyprus posts. I just saw u to call u r self turkish cypriot and to speak in behalf of Cyprus people , yes u r turkish Cypriot and i love u and i respect u like greek cypriots and general CYPRIOTS , but u remember that u r cypriot 1 time a year, and that make me agry , and for example u living in UK but if in future Turkey send bad song and Cyprus good song i m preety sure and u r sure also that u r going to vote for Turkey. U call u r self Cypriot but in u r favory countreys u have all muslims and turk brother nations ( Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Albania, FYRO Macedonia ) but where is u r countrey? where is Cyprus? And dont tell me that u have that specific countreys in u r favory list beacuse of the songs , anyway its u r right to have any countrey in u r favory list and to support any countrey u want but since u never support u countrey ( even and with bad song ) and u ignore u r countrey and u say that u dont feel Cypriot but Turk ( i saw u to say it that ), before to anser and call u r self turk or cypriot u have to disite insite u what do u are, are u Cypriot ( or turkish cypriot if u want)? or Turk? Beacuse Cyprus and Turkey are 2 different nations :) And u cant be 363 days of the year Turk and 1 day of the year Cypriot and to speak in behalf of Cypriots . :)

I really cant understand that some people' problem about turkiye' lands
why do they care it so much
even if its in europe, asia, africa ...
so what
whats the matter
i wonder if they think all the continents r useless except eruope ? or what

just get over these things
its sooo ridiculous !!!!

Ozi C* T.C [42913]
Tue 9 Jun 2009 13:18:24

@ Lina, you know as well as I do that Cyprus is an Asian country. Yes you are right it is in the Mediterranean but it’s still in Asia!

Turkey is also in the Mediterranean but it’s still in Asia as well. The Mediterranean is not a continent! I can’t believe you would deny that it is in Asia. :O

Also the reason why I don’t right all the time in the Cyprus articles is because I didn’t like the song... and I don’t think its right to keep on writing that over and over again...

You cannot deny that Turkey is more in Europe than Cyprus… the European Union and EUROPE is two different things. The first is a political union whilst the second is a geographic location… Try not to get the two mixed up.

@Ozi , Cyprus is not in Asia. Cyprus is an Island in medditeranian who have strong europian back round ( history, culture etc ), Turkey have a land in europe but turkish culture, history and general back round is not europian. And please dont say that u r turkish cypriot beacuse u feel 100% turk ( u say it ), u know nationality is not only in papers :) I never saw u to support Cyprus, even and in u r favory ESC list u have all muslim and turk brother nations , but Cyprus ( u r countrey ( ? ) ) is not there ;) And also always u support Turkey in all posts and in Cyprus post sometimes u dont react at all or u react with 1-2 reactions :) Even and now u run to support Turkey and to say that Cyprus is not Europe . Thnx

France gave the list of their voting for the Final:

JURY
1 point to Armenia
2 points to Azerbaijan
3 points to Lithuania
4 points to United Kingdom
5 points to Estonia
6 points to Germany
7 points to Turkey
8 points to Denmark
10 points to Norway
12 points to Israel

OVERALL (Jury + televoting)
1 point to Azerbaijan
2 points to Sweden
3 points to Germany
4 points to United Kingdom
5 points to Denmark
6 points to Armenia
7 points to Portugal
8 points to Norway
10 points to Israel
12 points to Turkey

Maybe French televoting was

12 > Turkey
10 > Portugal
8 > Norway
7 > Israel

So that the French results were:

(Jury / Televoting / Result / Given)

Turkey: 7 / 12 / 19 / 12
Israel: 12 / 7 / 19 / 10
Norway: 10 / 8 / 18 / 8
Portugal: - / 10 / 10 / 7

@ ilcielo. Then why is Cyprus one of your favourite countries (according to your profile)??? Cyprus is 100% in ASIA and this statement comes from a Turkish Cypriot to you!!!!

Turkey actually has land in Europe. Almost 15 million alone live in Istanbul... and if you add other European parts of Turkey; the population of the European part of Turkey is probably close to 20 million...

If you dont like Turkey and Armenia recieving points all the time... I suggest you vote more on the songs you like and stop moaning.

If like Azarbaijan ex-Iranian country participate to the ESC,
why not participate Turkey?
Turkey already participate to the Eurovision since 35 year.
And Greece, Russia, Ukraina and Armenia already not asian countries, these countries have a cultural and historic strong basic relations with Europe. They are all heirs of the Roman Empire. These countries have unique and rich culture of music
they can participate to the Eurovision also Asiavision and all others contest. I think Hadise's song is more great then unfair Irano-Azero cheap song. and Azo's song is "Always" always same rythim and repeat music and moaning like a Indian mimic
never listen.

ilcielo [34259]

We are tired of seeing Armenia and Turkey receive 10-12 points every year from Netherlands. Yet 5 and 8 points are still too generous to these songs. OMG I cannot stand listening to both these songs-- especially Hadise's song is horrible! Turkey and Armenia should participate in AsiaVision Song Contest as they receive undeserved high marks from their huge diaspora elsewhere in Europe. They are both Asian countries anyway --should not be allowed to participate in ESC. Greece Ukraine and Russia too should not be allowed in ESC by the same reason.
