Finland: Eurovision still draws in a huge audience

Finnpanel has released the viewing figures for the Finnish TV for last week. The Eurovision Song Contest final from Moscow was watched by 1 307 000 viewers. The first semi-final, where Finland also competed got 810 000 viewers, whereas the second semi-final got 465 000. This is a clear improvement on last year, especially for the first semi-final.

Finnpanel gives 4 698 000 as the potential audience, and that number includes all 10 years olds and older in Finland. Also delayed viewing and viewing away from home has been included in the figures since the beginning of last year. The Eurovision Song Contest final was clearly the most watched programme in the whole week, beating clearly the daily soap opera Salatut elämät in second place that had 865 000 viewers. The daily magazine reports from Moscow, Haloo Moskova got its best rating on the Friday before the final, when 315 000 viewers tuned in for the latest gossip from Moscow.

In 2008 the final got 1 208 000 viewers or 70 % of the total audience at the time. The final hosted in Helsinki in 2007 got 1 905 000 viewers or 83 %. In 2006 1 6 000 000 watched Lordi win the final for Finland in Athens.

The last time when Finland was not in the final in 2005, the final was watched only by less than 400 000 viewers, dropping from the 557 000 watching the semi-final. The year before in 2004 the ratings were 889 000 for the semi-final and 549 000 for the final.

You better send some of your great metal again Finland! That's what you do best!!! :D :D :D :D

I will never get over the fact that your juries screwed up for Nightwish in 2000!!!

looking back on it, waldo's people were a huge mistake to eurovision, saved only to final by the juries.. Riikka was robbed euroviisut 2009 who knows how well she could have done going 24th since her song is somewhat appealing to the same people who voted for estonia (6th overall)..
but finland still remains one of the strongest esc countries of all time and one of the very best SF year after year! thanks for that.

@ Marianna
I've just checked it, it is OK! ;)
I didn't like Jari Silanpaa - "takes 2 tango" and in this year Finland National final his song!

Jari Sillanpää Takes 2 to tango was bad, but I personally like very much Valkeaa unelmaa - White dream. It was in Finnish competition 1998.

Chris P,

I love "Reagge Ok" too! And the first 7 seconds of "Nuku pommiin" is totally brilliant, but then it totally bombs. Finland is truly the land of "different" entires. We should keep it up IMO.

---
For a fact I loved "Lose control" but it never really came across great in the liveperformance so even if 25th place was a bit lower than expected I never thought it would reach top10 - based on the performance on the nigh.

I dunno why people think juries shouldn't be "approchable" to rock songs. I think juries are meant to vote for more diverse and untypical songs for ESC (not dull styles like schlagers, euroballads or cheesy retro disco - not saying it's always so of course!).

With a better performance, I am sure Switzerland could have been in a good chance for a jury wildcard in semi 1. It was the best song of all 42, but tragically, their lead singer sang badly in the verses, he didn't find the right pitch for the music I think. Macedonia would have qualified if it wasn't for juries prefering Finland (for the 2nd year running, Macedonia just lost out with excellent songs). In the other semi, Ireland just missed out too, it's a miracle how juries could prefer the bore from Croatia. latvia was an excellent quality song, but too subtle and uncompromising for real success in ESC - they have ALL honour for this song though (unlike last year! One of the most infantile and "shabby" songs EVER!). As for Belarus, great performance, but it was too old-fashioned I guess.

I was really gutted none of the rock songs made it myself...The semi results were overall terrible! Hoever, last year, rock songs DID well. Finland surprised many (not me though) when they made it to the final, with their great heard rock song. Azerbadsjan made it with their "rock opera" kind of 70s song. Turkey moade it with modern indie rock etc....

Even if I like "Lose Control", I think Finland should go back to the rock style next year. it's also obvious it's the style they do best with. I was so delighted when they won in 2006! :) it was a clear message from the televoters - WE WANT MORE ROCK IN ESC PLEASE! And it HAS been more rock in recent years. Good for ESC and it's repuation. More credibilty and "serious" touch to the music. And I think the rock songs in ESC have shown some very good melodic sides. It's not just rock, but catchy rock.

Rock IS the new schlager! :)

BTW ESCTODAY EDITORS:
It's a big log in problem at this site, PLEASE try to sort it out! :) I tried to log in several times to reply to this post. But "feell out" from my profile each time I opened a new page here. And it ALWAYS happens....!!! It's getting really annoying. When I try to answer another news post here, I guess it will happen again :(

Thank you for your support in this thread, everyone! :)
(Glad that we Finns are not the only ones who feel our result was unfair.)

Yes, the viewing figures are still high, but I feel if this trend continues (for 2 years we have been mostly ignored what comes to actual results), they surely will not stay high anymore... :S

Well, next year I feel we'll be sending something completely different (again)... ;) Probably not rock (although I wouldn't mind :P), but maybe something ethnic... We'll see :)

Who knows? Maybe it will be reagge? Oh right...we did that...in 1981. ;)

Maybe I shouldn't admit it, but I love that song! I also kinda liked Nuku Pommin ;-) But Finland has sent a lot of erm... "different" songs. Actually, I would say when they sent something normal, I didn't like it.

I still don´t get that Finland was the jury wildcard... It does not make sense. I´m looking forward to see what kind of songs will end up in the Finnish selection of 2010, since they are giving the NF a "make over" (as previously reported.) Who knows? Maybe it will be reagge? Oh right...we did that...in 1981. ;)

Marianna,
I was equally angry and I'm still upset about it..and even more after seeing some of the songs that the juries (because we don't know the televoting results yet) ranked so much higher.

Lily Bel [59906]
Thu 21 May 2009 12:23:49

@ Marianna S
Don't be angry! ;)
"Lose control' is kind of song which stays popular after ESC, because it is very good in studio version and many ppl all around Europe listen to it! :)
Tapani Kansa is world class voice and singer, but I don't know will Europe like this! :( I like it! :) ;)

Lily Bel ( Marko )
Tapani Kansa was good. Good and powerful voice.
Personally, I was so angry on Sunday ( because of Waldo ) that I ruined my profile, all out.
Now, there is something........Well, life is hard, sometimes.

Hopefully, Finland will not send any long - haired rocker to Oslo next year !

I hope not. It's obvious that juries and rock don't go well together (considering there were good rock songs in both semis and none was saved by the jury).

What happened to Waldo and Lose control ?

Friday, they had a dress rehearsal. This rehearsal was recorded to members of jyry.Their points are based on this recording.
Saturday, before the competition jyry`s points were already been given. Finnish television reporter told this and I also read about that.
In that rehearsal Karoliina`s ( female singer ) voice didn`t last for good. She had a sore throat. The previous week Waldo was sick, and then Karoliina. On Saturday she sang guite well.
Poor voice has been able to take points.

Good summer to all from me and Saru !

Hopefully, Finland will not send any long - haired rocker to Oslo next year !
