Part 4

Eurovision results analysis: Voting blocs & diasporas

As always after the Eurovision Song Contest, we take a look at the results from a statistical point of view. The analysis is split into four parts and the fourth part is dedicated to the question of bloc voting and diaspora voting.

To find out how the three classic voting blocs - the Nordic countries, the former Yugoslav countries and the former USSR countries - have voted, we take a look at those blocs' top ten results. As no country can vote for itself, contestants that are not part of these blocs would have an advantage in these statistics. Therefore, we do not consider the absolute scores but the averages votes cast.

The Nordic countries (Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark):

  1. Norway - 11.0
  2. Iceland - 10.5
  3. Estonia - 6.8
  4. Azerbaijan - 5.6
  5. Turkey - 4.8
  6. Sweden - 4.5
  7. Finland - 3.0
    Denmark - 3.0
  8. France - 2.6
    Bosnia & Herzegovina - 2.6
    Germany - 2.6

As two Nordic countries finished in the top two spots in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, it is no surprise that they were also the favourites of the Nordic countries. However, it has to be mentioned that all five Nordic countries had been in the final and all would have made the top ten with only these five countries voting. Remarkably, Estonia and Germany were also more popular than in the other countries.

The former Yugoslav countries (Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro):

  1. Bosnia & Herzegovina - 11.2
  2. Norway - 9.7
  3. Croatia - 7.0
  4. Azerbaijan - 4.6
  5. United Kingdom - 4.2
  6. Greece - 4.0
  7. Turkey - 3.8
  8. Albania - 3.6
  9. France - 2.8
  10. Iceland - 2.3

Bosnia & Herzegovina finished ninth overall but got the highest average score among the former Yugoslav countries. Norway is second and followed by Croatia, the country that in fact finished 18th and was the jury wildcard in the second semi final. Albania is often considered a part of this 'bloc' and Kejsi Tola was also very popular in these countries. On the other hand, runner-up Iceland was only seen in tenth place.

The former USSR countries (Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Latvia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, Estonia):

  1. Norway - 10.7
  2. Russia - 7.9
  3. Azerbaijan - 6.8
  4. Estonia - 5.9
  5. France - 4.1
  6. Iceland - 4.1
  7. Ukraine - 3.6
  8. United Kingdom - 3.1
  9. Greece - 2.1
  10. Moldova - 2.1

Although Norway was the clear favourite here again (and it has to be mentioned that Alexander Rybak was born in Belarus), Russia was seen in second place despite actually only finishing 11th in the final. Furthermore, Ukraine and Moldova were placed much higher. On the other hand, the French entry was also very popular, probably due to Patricia Kaas' popularity in these countries.

Probably due to the introduction of jury voting, diaspora seemed slightly reduced this year. To name just a few examples: Ireland gave its 12 points not to a Baltic state in a Eurovision final for the first time since 2004, Germany did not give its 12 points to Turkey or Greece for the first time since 2003 and for the first time ever Armenia did not receive 10 or 12 points from Belgium.

Sam, Turkey gots lots of 12 points because they were brilliant and produced a wonderful show that stood out from the rest of the entries in the final. They did deserve it and performed beautifully. It seems that many of the juries liked the Turkish entry too. Hope that answers your question.

I saw a big improvement in the voting. It can never be "perfect" with televoting, but it is more democratic and fun for us - the viewers and fans. There will always be people not satisfied no matter what voting system is used. I think50/50 is just the right amount.

Gorgi aleks - I disagree with you totally. There was an element of neighbourly voting but overall it was a vast improvement. I bet on Spain to win but on the night it was a big disappointment and at only 66-1 it was hardly a favourite. As for the Greek song, I know he is popular in Greece but the act and song was gimicky, very classic Eurovision and surprisingly the contest has moved on from that sad old format. Also he clearly loves himself more than europe does. All in all justice was done. Norway deserved to win and most countries gave him 12. Iceland deserved 2nd too.

Why did so many countries (including my own UK) give twelve to Turkey?...

Can something be done about this?

@ The_ErincH King

Yes, Greece and Cyprus are really boring, but Turkey and Azerbaijan also! And all other block voting!

@JOSE JOSE Mª

I don't know ehat is that about Spain, but they were really better than 24th position. Something is definitely wrong with new voting system. But, the question is: which voting system is the best?

@ Avatar Max

I'm from Serbia and I like Britan's song and Jade (finally, something really good from UK), but your participants and songs last few years weren't so good and I know that many people from Serbia gave points to UK and Norway.

It's always matter of taste, but of course, neighbouring countries vote for each other. Serbia gave only 5 pts to Croatia this year (I personally don't like their song, they didn't deserve any points), but Bosnia was very good. Manager of Regina lives in Belgrade... composer also, so... and Regina is famous in Serbia (it's ex-Yugoslav band, in fact).

I don't like block voting, but I can said that Serbian televoters are more correct than many other (especially this year).

IRELAND ACTUALLY WERE VOTED OUT OF THE SEMI FINAL BY LITHUANIAN AND POLISH IMMIGRANTS IN IRELAND VOTING FOR THEIR HOME COUNTRIES. IRISH PEOPLE WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR CRAP. ALSO THE SPANISH NEVER VOTED.
THE COMPETITION IS STILL A FARCE.. A TOTAL SHAMBLES.

IT´S A SHAME!!!!!! I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE SPANISH POSITION.
THE NORWEY ENTRY IS GOOD, BUT THE RANK OF SPANISH SONG IS A JOKE. EUROPE HAVE BOICOTED THE SPANISH ENTRY. EVRY YEAR IS THE SAME, I'M VERY SAD. THE NEXT YEAR I HOPE A NEW CHIKI CHIKI OR NOT PARTICIPATED. THE SPANISH TELEVISION CAN USED OUR MONEY FOR MORE IMPORTANT THINGS IN THIS CRISIS MOMENT. IF THE EUROPE WANT TO MAKE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST, THEY WILL HAVE TO PAY IT.
SPAIN HAVE BEEN STOLEN!ª!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATULATION NORWAY, UK, PORTYGAL AND FRANCE.

Juries didn;t help as much as we wanted.

UK Switzerland and France gave 12 to Turkey

Scandinavians voted for each other [i'm talking about Finland and Sweden being voted by neighbours]

Finland voted for Estonia

Albania voted for Greece

Ex-soviet countries voted for each other.

Daniel from the block

I dont agree with you. Denmark got fewer points this year from other scandinavian countrys. We got no points at all from Sweden and Finland, and only 4 from Iceland and 8 from Norway. So i dont agree that the jury was better for us.

Let's be honest.
The Baltic States are clear example of being closer to Nordic countries rather than in USSR. If you take Baltic States out, Estonia's place would be much lower.

It's actually good question where to put the Baltic States. They are somewhere between Scandinavian and ex_USSR, but I'd rather see them among Scandinavian countries while calculating bloc votings.

Alexander Rybak is a hero for the Ex-USSR! Born in Belarus, he succeeded in making Russia in to years in a row! It was really nice to see his parents on the russian after show speaking perfect russian too!

Congrats Alexander!

That doesnt make sence, 2 of the top five are Scandinavian 2 are from South/East Europe and then the UK. Sounds fair to me, where did Denmark, Sweden and Finland end up? nowhere near the top 5. I didn't like the Norway song but loved Iceland and Spain, Estonia and Portugal.

@ whatever...are you for real or off your rocker. Greece did well to get into the top 10 with such an average song! I am fed up hearing that Greece was sabotaged. The song just wasnt that good, why cant you accept that????????

the whole thing was a fiasco and you guys say whatever you want!!the jurys this year destroyed eurovision...Tell me guys where was yersterday romania finland and spain who were favorites in all the pre-eurovision polls??i am sure that all the juries voted the boring songs of alexander yohanna jade patricia portugal israel and denmark...thing guys why norway voted last and not in her right place??why??why they had exaggerated kirkorov to withdraw of the russian jury but they didn't say anything for andrew lloyd webber who went to vladimir putin and begged like a horn for russia to give 12 points to england?why every country gave 12 points to norway 6-10 points to iceland and uk about 4-7 points to portugal and france and of course diaspora and neighbour voting didn't stopped??surely not because of the televoting..because eurofans like songs like ruslana's one like every way that i can like my number one like never let you go tornero and of course believe qele qele and my secret combination..this year how came and the eurofans didn't like romania spain finland greece??don't tell me because they have chenged their musical tastes in one year!!the whole thing was a fiasco!

So much for our friends in the North.

Looking at these statistics, if only Nordic countries voted, The Uk wouldn't even finish in the Top 10.

We complain, USSR and Yugoslavia dont like us, but they clearly like us a lot more than our supposed friends in the North.

Yugoslavia would have kept the Uk in 5th place, USSR block, would have put us in 8th place, but at least we'd still be Top 10.

We got 8 from countries like Serbia and Albania, who supposedly dont like us.

And our allies from Nordic countries, dont even give us 2 points on average.

Hi Stockholm calling
Thanks a lot - Denmark did a lot better in the final than in the semifinal, unlike Sweden - for some reason. Would have liked to vote for Malena , she is very charming and what a voice, but the song wasn't her level, she deserved better .

bence bu puan farkının oluşması eurovisionun baştan heyecanını bitirdi.bence bunu önlemek için sadece finaldeki ülkeler oy kullanmalı.çünkü yarı finalde herkes rakibine oy veriyor.finalde de herkes rakiblerine vermeli.dışarıdan müdehaleler ile yarışma politikleşiyor.böylece herkes iyi şarkı yapmaya özen gösterir die düşünüorum.çünkü eurovisionu sevdiren olay ülkelerin kendilerine değil rakiplerine oy vermesi.bizim yarı finallerde başarılı bir şekilde finale çıkıp finalde başarısız olmamızın nedeni finallerde bloglaşmaların olması.böylece bloglar zayıflatılacak.bu sene norveç haketti ama hadiseyle çekişerek kazanabilirdi benim dediğim gibi olsaydı.YORUMLARINIZI BEKLİYORUM!!!!!!!!

Can we see how the results were with no juries? I can say i saw a remarkable difference in neighborvoting.

The voting would've been much more exciting this year...

But Norway was just too strong ;)

I'm very happy 2 Big4 countries were able to get to the Top10

Greece didn't deserve to be in the final with this song. So they should be celebrating a 7th place, achieved mostly thanks to some diaspora and of course the obligatory 12 points from Cyprus (which sucks)

Why do many think there is a giant conspiracy against a country if it doesn't do well? Face it, sh*t happens sometimes. This is just entertainment and not the end of the world. I hope all countries will make another effort next year, with an aim to deliver the best quality possible and not withdraw. Us Norwegians know everything about coming last as we hold the record...

One final thing: could it be an idea to let the five direct qualifiers perform in the semis as well? Looking at statistics from the introduction of the semis all the winners and a vast majority of the top 10 placings have had to qualify.
