LTV, the Latvian broadcaster, has reported that 12o songs were submitted for Supernova 2016, the contest which will determine who will represent Latvia in Eurovision 2016. “We got 20% more submissions than last year”, says Ilze Jansone, LTV’s Project Manager.

The 6th final placing at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, coming after failing to qualify to the final since 2009, has increased the interest of the national selection. A total of 88 performers have submitted themselves to the competition – 57 soloists, 10 duets, 17 groups and 3 defined as “others”. “We predict that the contest will be tougher than last year”, adds Jansone.

A panel of experts will now pick the 20 finalists that will participate in Supernova 2016. The decision will be made by early December, but the full lineup will be published only at the end of January.

The selection itself will repeat last year’s formula with four shows:

  • 7/2/2016 – Heat 1: 10 participating songs, 4 qualify to the semi-final round
  • 14/2/2016 – Heat 2: 10 participating songs, 4 qualify to the semi-final round
  • 21/2/2016 – Semi-final: 8 participating songs, 4 qualify to the final
  • 28/2/2016 – Final: 4 participating songs, the winner will go on to represent Latvia in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.
