The potential participation of Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest is back under question today after comments from the Culture and Tourism Minister, Abulfas Garayev. Whilst confirming that the first round of the preselection had been completed, be left open a doubt that the country will be present in Belgrade.

Yesterday, Azeri Press reported that the country’s preselection for their first Eurovision Song Contest entry had begun and announced details of the jury that would select a group of performers from almost 40 candidates. Today, however, the Azerbaijani Minister for Culture and Toursim claimed that although preparations are under way, it is not yet certain that the country will appear on stage in Belgrade.

Whilst confirming that the first stage of the selection process had been completed, he told the Azeri Press Agency:

We have kept our promise and started preparations for Azerbaijan’s participation in Eurovision song contest, but I can not say anything about its results. We will possibly watch Azerbaijan in Eurovision song contest in 2008”.
