Cyprus: 31 years in Eurovision

[tps_header]Cyprus announced a few weeks ago their decision to withdraw from the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. The decision brought massive disappointment to the fans as Cyprus has been amongst the favourite countries in Eurovision for the past 31 years. Through the years, the country has had a mixture of good and bad results and today esctoday looks back to the Cypriot history in Eurovision.[/tps_header]

Debut

Cyprus debuted into the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 where they entered the band Island which was formed for the occasion of the contest. The members of the band where Areti Kassapi Haralabidou, Aristos Moskovakis, Roger Lee, Doros Georgiadis and Alexia Vassiliou (she also represented Cyprus in the 1987 contest).  The song they performed at Eurovision was the love ballad Monika where they finished in a very respectful 6th place with 69 points.
