Irish to revamp selection process for 2005

Following Ireland's worst ever result at the Eurovision Song Contest, RTE is planning a complete revamp of their pre-selection process for 2005. Chris Doran's If my world stopped turning, written by former Westlife singer Bryan McFadden, finished one from the bottom and receiving just 7 votes – all of which came from a single country.

Ireland's last two entries have been selected by the commerically popular You're a Star show, where previous Irish representatives and music experts give their views and the public vote for the winner.

It is believed that the You're a Star show will remain, but with a large overhaul and face lift. There will be “emphasis on acts that have spectacle and choreography, rather than the traditional singer and songwriter approach of recent years. We recognise that the show (Eurovision Song Contest) has moved on with the increased number of countries now voting and with the style of song and perfomance that have scored well”.

Ireland have continued to send strong ballads to the Eurovision Song Contest since the formula won them a first ever hattrick of back-to-back wins between 1992 and 1994. The formula has failed to reproduce success in the last 10 years, and we wait to see what form the 2005 Irish entry will take.
