Malta, Norway and the United Kingdom selected their participants for the first Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

Malta will be represented by Sarah Harrison, who performed Like a star. She gained 170 of the 200 available points and was by far the number one favorite. Sarah isn't totally unknown on the Mediterranean island: she also hosts a television programme for children. Her neece was one of the backings of Lynn Chircop, who represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest this year.

In Norway, the 11-year old Joakim Harestad and the 10-year old Charlot Daysh won the national selection for the juniors with Sinnsykt gal forelsket, which is an uptempo song in the same line as the Danish song Arabiens drøm. Their group name is 2U (picture).

In the United Kingdom not the BBC but ITV was responsible for the selection of the British participant for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The 10-year old Tom Morley won the national final with My song for the world, a pop-style ballad.
