Winners that were just missing out

The only winning song of the 1970s that can be considered a real surprise was A-ba-ni-bi in 1978. Izhar Cohen & Alpha-Beta won for Israel for the first time without being considered a major favourite.

In 1996, Ireland won for the seventh time. Eimear Quinn's The voice was expected to reach a decent position, although another victory for Ireland was not seen as for sure.

In 2003, Turkey won for the first time. Sertab Erener's betting odds had been around 1-15 and the top favourites that year by a clear distance was Russia followed by Spain.

Surprise winners before 1971

In 1968, it was probably seen as almost for sure that the United Kingdom would win, which should make Massiel's first place for Spain a surprise, although we can't tell which position was exepected for La la la.

Denmark's victory in 1963 was probably also a surprise as the song was quite different from typical winning songs in the years before.

The victory of Dors mon amour in 1958 may have been a surprise, although the juries were probably expected to vote well for typical French chansons. However, it is definitely a retrospective surprise considering the success of Nel blu dipinto di blu after the contest.

This concludes the 13th esctoday.com TOP TEN list. Tomorrow, we will continue with the following topic:

The list features three sub-rankings as each position is divided into the three categories female act, male act and duo/group.
